10-Year-Old Grand Slams Chemo Bell After Raising $100k

Benjamin Burke has a big heart. The 10-year-old, who was diagnosed with cancer just days after his seventh birthday, didn’t just fight cancer — he spent his time battling the disease helping others.

When Benjamin met his hero, Chicago Cub first baseman Anthony Rizzo, himself a cancer survivor, he decided he wanted to raise money for The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation. Benjamin then hatched his idea for his “lemonaid” stand. To-date he and his family have raised more than $100,000 to help kids like him. The money he’s raised goes directly toward helping kids at Benjamin’s children’s hospital, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Last week after years of chemo and doctors appointments, Benjamin rang the chemo bell — marking the end of his chemotherapy treatments. His friend, Anthony Rizzo was in attendance.

Rizzo tweeted: “This kid did it! Benjamin rang the bell symbolizing the end of his 3 1/2 year Cancer treatment. The Cancer Journey is never truly over but so proud of this guy for getting through this huge step. Thank you for including me in your day.”

Benjamin is a national ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and will continue his fundraising efforts to help kids like him.
