Running 4 Miracles-Dayton, OH

Celebrating Mason's Resilient Survival

It’s official.  The Conway Family has launched its Miracle Mission to run 50 marathons honoring 50 preemies in 50 different states.

On September 17, I will run the Air Force Marathon in Dayton, OH, in honor of 2-year-old Mason, born prematurely at 34 weeks.   When born, Mason was very sick.  He struggled to breathe; his blood platelets were low; his blood sugar was too low.  They weren’t sure what was wrong with him, but he needed to be immediately transported to Dayton Children’s Hospital.  Everything suddenly flipped sideways for a family who had gone through nearly an entire pregnancy believing their new baby was perfectly healthy and normal.  They learned there had been an undiagnosed problem with the placenta while Mason was in the womb.  He wasn’t getting enough nutrients, causing him to fail to grow properly, and resulting in complications in nearly every system in Mason’s body – his heart, kidneys, endocrine, and blood cells – all were impacted.  After spending 45 days in the NICU, every one of those issues was resolved.  The family credits all of this to the incredible care team at Dayton Children’s Hospital.    The family describes Mason as a fighter.  That’s why they call him ‘Champ!’ He’s smart, inquisitive, stubborn, loving, and so much more.  Mason represents how the Children’s Miracle Network gives patients at the Children’s Hospital of Dayton a fighting chance.

As a family, we have dedicated our fundraising efforts to pay it forward for the support we received from the Children’s Miracle Network when our son Brooks, who is now 17 years old, healthy and thriving, was born at 25 weeks, weighing just 1 lb 6 oz.  He spent four months in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital.  He represents why we believe miracles do happen.
