Thousands of Children’s Miracle Network hospital supporters gathered to be inspired during the General Session of the charity’s annual Celebration event at Walt Disney World, in Orlando, Fla. today.

Cardiac surgeon, author and Emmy-Award winning talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz delivered the event’s keynote address, speaking to representatives from the 170 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, as well as representatives from the charity’s corporate sponsors and media partners.

Immediately following his address, Dr. Oz helped honor 67 children’s hospital patients who are at Celebration as part of the Children’s Miracle Network Champions program. Along with representatives from the Walmart Foundation and Walmart-Canada, the Champions program’s title sponsors, Dr. Oz gave each Champion a medal in an emotional ceremony.

The Champions program identifies a child from every state in the U.S. and one from every Canadian province who has been treated at a Children’s Miracle Network hospital for a serious medical affliction. Each Champion represents countless other children that have faced severe medical challenges and received care and treatment at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

Also among those honored during the General Session was Richard Harris from Corpus Christi, Texas—an employee at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Harris was honored with the Stephanie Melemis Excellence in Service Award presented by McLane Company. The award recognizes an individual involved with fundraising at a Children’s Miracle Network hospital whose accomplishments, ongoing efforts and overall service reflect a passion that show kids truly come first.
