Why I Extra Life: In Memory of my Son, Brendon
The “Why I Extra Life” series is a web series where Extra Life participants share their reasons for supporting their Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through gaming. The post below was written by Sandra Moore, Extra Life participant and mother of Miracle Child, Brendon:
My son, Brendon, is my inspiration to Extra Life. When he was three years old he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer. He fought through it every day for three years until he passed away in February 2005. During that time he really loved computer, PlayStation and Xbox games. When he was 4 years old, he received a wish from the Make a Wish foundation. The thing he wanted most: an Xbox and a screen that was big enough to play with life-sized characters. The games he loved the most were Halo 2, Godzilla, The Hulk and Spider-Man.
When he was not at home playing his games he was at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. They did everything they could to make him comfortable and to feel at ease; he actually loved going there. The treatments, not so much, but he loved the nurses.
I heard about Extra Life through Facebook just before last year’s 24 hour Game Day. I saw games and raising money for Doernbecher’s, so I had to join. I will be playing for them again.
